This week I’ve been stretching my comfort zone and creating some freehand painted textiles. This is a leap of faith for me as my usual medium is Indian Wood Block Printing.

Whilst I love the precision and mathematics involved in wood block printing, it is refreshing to push my boundaries from time to time and try something new.

I had recently bought some lovely vintage cotton napkins on Vinted which just seemed to cry out for a folksy, Scandinavian design.

I did paint myself a rough draft on paper before committing to the fabric but that pretty much went out of the window once I got started! Fabric paints work in a completely different way to acrylics (my usual medium) and, by necessity, I found myself being looser and more relaxed with the brushes. Once I had relaxed and stopped worrying about what the paint was doing I discovered a whole new world of colour and exploration. It was like reverting to childhood, just playing with the paint and brushes.
